Once upon a time, on the cusp of joining the misunderstood species; I snuck into the cinema with my equally excitable friends to see a film that changed my dreams and aspirations forever:  Kevin and Perry Go Large. No longer did I desire to fly to moon, no more did I wish to follow in Rolf Harris’ veterinarian footsteps…I had been officially musically baptized; baptized into a world where the Thong Song no long made me want to wiggle my toosh; I had well and truly forgotten about Dre; and Craig David was definitely 7 days past its sell by date. I had one goal… I needed trance, I needed techno, I needed to be a superstar DJ, and most importantly I needed Amnesia. Ten extruciately long years of bitterly watching my older siblings jet off to the infamous White Isle, whilst I endured the pitiful under 18 discos and local old man boozers, I was booked, packed and ready to go.

They say all good things come to those who wait, but to my utter dismay the first time I visited Amnesia I was verging on crippled. An Ibiza virgin, it was two days after a mammoth night at the Carl Cox Closing party at Space and I had literally savaged every last muscle in my body. I simply could not appreciate that I was standing in what Amnesia itself calls the ‘best global club’. I could but only sway side to side, with a hunched over back, wincing at every desire to fist my hands in the air when the trance was unleashed. But to say I had a bad time, would be complete a lie – I was in a superclub surrounded by thousands of fellow ravers embracing every tintilating soundwave. The last moment I recall at Amnesia was a magical and emotional clubbing moment, on a platform embracing my friend as ’All I Wanna Do Is Do It’ bellowed out the sound system, and we swapped pointing rave fingers with the hired podium dancers. From there on we were unfortunately done for; the last ounce of energy had diminished and suffering an equally painful dance hangover, my companions and I left before the sun had risen; a rather inappropriate time for any Ibiza clubber; though cabs were plentiful.

My second visit to Amnesia last year was equally painful on the body, but certainly more enjoyable. A trip to Ibiza is a test of endurance, thus spending the hours of 7-midnight at CircoLoco in DC10 before hitting a Cocoon party at Amnesia was bound to be difficult. However, fuelled with pizza and several pints of water we joined the masses and embraced the glorious morning ahead.

Amnesia consists of two large rooms. Renovated and updated in 2008, the Amnesia Terrace is a huge rectangular greenhouse with palm trees, an array of bars and is considered one Ibiza and world clubbing’s most spectacular dance music arenas. The Main Room is the traditional place to rave and the room which is famously showcased in the film Kevin and Perry Go Large. It has a central pit like dance floor, which is overlooked by the VIP areas on the top level, as well as the DJ booth and famous Amnesia dancers.

The most legendary feature at Amnesia are the two massive ‘ice cannons’ that blast cold air and fire off at regular intervals in both rooms, as well as copious amounts of foam at the Espuma parties. The cold blasts are refreshing, but don’t do much to reduce the sweat that inevitably comes hand in hand with any clubbing event on the White Isle.

Amnesia is situated directly opposite Privilege, half way between Ibiza Town and SanAntonio on the main road near the village of San Rafeal. The best ways to reach the club are: by taxi [€10-€15  from San Antonio, Playa D’en Bossa or Ibiza Town]; the disco bus which runs all night; or a special free bus which is provided by the club or promoter. Be warned the bus drivers don’t take kindly to the excitable spirits of Amnesia or Privilege revelers. Our last bus driver that took us to Amnesia stopped in the middle of the motorway, turned off the engine and stepped off the bus to smoke a cigarette; seemingly outraged at the foot stomping and chorus of singing.

You can expect to pay from €40 to €50 for the parties Cream and Cocoon. Entry on other days costs between €25 and €40. Spirit and mixers cost €12-15 or more and a beer €10. Water is incredibly - and almost painful to type-  €8. Warning: if you’re thinking of visiting in style in the VIP area, the prices are also VIP i.e. more expensive!

Amnesia is arguably the quintessential Ibiza clubbing experience, and has been voted the Best Global Club at several of the last International Dance Music Awards in Miami. The club plays host to some of the world’s leading DJs and brands, as well as hosting some of the most popular parties including: Cocoon, Cream, Matinée, and Espuma (Foam) Party. It is certainly a sight to behold. The light shows are entrancing, the sound system is almost deafening and the interior design is awe inspiring. Off all the clubs in Ibiza, Space is still by far my favorite, but it definitely wouldn’t be a trip to Ibiza without visiting what many call a clubbing haven. Enjoy! And make sure your well rested.

Headlining the inaugural Pause is ViVa Music star Darius Syrossian. Having grown up influenced by House legends Kenny Dope and DJ Sneak, Darius has gone on to tour every continent while releasing music  on some of the world’s leading House/Techno labels such as Get Physical, ViVa Music and 8bit. He consistently charts on Beatport and in DJ Mag’s top 100 tracks with efforts like “I Am The Creator Of Jack” and this summer’s “Freaky D” is sure to be a huge Ibiza hit.

His position within the ViVa Music team sees him present a monthly online radio show, including interviews and guest mixes from world renowned artists, going out to listeners in 30 countries across the world. Plus, this summer he releases his own ViVa Music Mix CD!

With one of the biggest selling releases in the history of 2020 Vision, Burnski was hailed as a prodigy upon first surfacing in the mid 00′s. Since then, he has cemented a solid reputation as an artist erring on the deeper side of the dancefloor, releasing consistently excellent music on labels such as Poker Flat, Dessous and Hot Creations.

We also welcome Glimpse. From the early days of his hugely successful ‘Black Series’ through to the groove-laden tech house of ‘Drifting’ on Planet E and, later, fully pursuing the deep and organic take on house via his Crosstown Rebels singles and album – this musical range has gained him the respect of his peers and culminated in two successive nominations in DJ Magazine’s prestigious ‘Best British Producer’ category.

Mysterious duo Waze & Odyssey (PetFood, Southern Fried) bring the best elements of nineties NY house and garage whilst still sounding totally fresh, W&O have seemingly appeared out of nowhere, clocking up their essential debut EP ‘Ah Baby’ on PetFood.

Casino Times are Joe Spencer and Nick Church from Oxford. They’ve been tearing clubs up recently as well as remixing the likes of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, MJ Cole and Jozif along the way. Ones to watch for summer 2012 and beyond!

Opening Parties

Oh yes! It’s that glorious time of the year again – summer has arrived and the best DJs in the world are jetting their way over to the White Isle. The Ibiza Opening Parties have begun and all of our much-loved superclubs are no doubt pulling out all the stops to make this year…if possible even bigger and better than the last!

DC10 - now famous for being famous, is one of the gems of the Ibiza clubbing scene, offering an entirely unique clubbing environment and experience. Unlike the other clubs on the island, DC10 does little or no publicity for its parties, meaning those who go are in the know and there for one reason; the music. DC10 is all about good DJs and quality underground electronic music. It is famous for it after hours parties, launching the careers of some of the island’s biggest DJs, fancy dress, and the fact it’s located at the end of the runway! DC10 definitely wins joint place with Bora Bora Beach for being the best late afternoon hotspot.

The legendary Monday morning session grew from a small band of hardcore ravers to being the most talked about party in Ibiza and possibly the whole world of electronic music in the last 10 years. It isn’t the most glamorous of clubs and there is no expensive lighting or production, but the careers of some of the best electronic DJs including Tania Vulcano, Loco Dice and Luciano are indebted to the success of the parties at DC10-who are we to complain about a lack of a few disco balls, and naked stilt women?

The building wasn’t made to withstand the heaving crowds it attracts.  The ques for the bars and toilets are hefty, getting outside is a chore, and the rooms are completely sardined with hot, sweaty revellers (no hiding that facemelt if DC10ing in the day!)…BUT, what it lacks in these areas, it more than makes up for in the uber quality of the sound system, DJs, and location.

The best way to get there is by taxi -  €10 from Ibiza Town or Playa D’en Bossa, and €25 from San Antonio. There is also the bus to Salinas beach which stops just past the club, or you can walk from Sant Jordi which takes about 15-20 minutes.

I am posting this link to demonstrate the attitude towards Berghain privacy, and share the comments made to one brave guest who decided to upload footage of the Berghain on YouTube (from our attempts to take a club snap in the Berghain-we are well aware how difficult this is, as we were immedietly told to remove by another clubber). I certainly do not intend to cause any offence or disrespect to the Berghain culture by sharing the video (especially as this video doesn’t even begin to reveal the epicness of this place) but am simply highlighting through video comments the offence caused if any choose to ’desecrate the temple’ by video recording inside the mighty Berghain.

It is truly fascinating to read how strongly Berghain goers are committed to the ’what happens in the Berghain stays in the Berghain’ culture. You will find with other videos taken from the Berghain or Panorama bar, that the dislike ratings are rocketing and commenters truly believe you are disrespecting them and the Berghain. Incredible! Whilst it all seems a bit extreme, having actually succeeded in gaining entry into the club when so many are refused entry, and experiencing the Berghain atmosphere, I to hope the mystery surrounding the Berghain remains and that other people do put the cameras away. I love a photo as much as the any other holiday snapper to recapture the moment over and over again, but the Berghain is simply unforgettable-no camera needed. Click link for Raider Berghain review.

I would summarise The Watergate Club as a swanky riverside cocktail bar/club for a  friendly, upmarket house crowd. Sounds like a pretty standard night out for a lot of Londoners, and if this is your scene then Watergate is the place for you – but given the Raiders have a taste for the more hedonistic damp and dingy nightspots, this club didn’t quite fit the mould.

With only a short stay in Berlin we wanted to ensure we descended upon the best clubs the city had to offer and from our lengthy club review research Watergate Club appeared to be one of them. After a truly unforgettable visit to Tresor the night before and gearing up for our penultimate hard techno rave at the mighty Berghain club later that morning, we expected Watergate to ooze the same epicness that Berlin night life had already graced us with. Unfortunately, one look at the prim crowd, the cubic-minimalist decor, neon LED lighting system and plush white leather poufs, and the disappointment set in. Sticking out like sore thumbs in our dust coated high-tops and jeans; the Watergate was a million miles away from our clubbing experiences the previous night. The Watergate club is certainly in a beautiful location overlooking the River Spree, the interior design is luxurious and sophisticated, cocktails are flowing, and polite flirting ensues in all corners. One reviewer even notes that you may be lulled into a false sense of sophistication – but when the first big tune sets in this evaporates. Actually, whilst we hoped it would, it doesn’t, and it still radiates that pretentious vibe you find in London hotspots which we were trying so hard to avoid. On a positive note the Watergate club does play host to many big DJ talents including Chicken Lips and Eric Morillo, so the music should not disappoint at all. However, again the ‘dance floor’ is compact and simply lacks the necessary space needed to manoeuvre moves to such big names.

Overall, I would say this is a relatively good club (bar) to start or wind down in and to enjoy good house and techno music; but this is only if you are prepared to pay for the slightly pricey entrance fees and drinks and if you are not planning on heading to a club like the Berghain after, as this place will not prepare you at all…we vote Tresor Club all the way.
